You’re doing your research and we love that. One of the most common questions we hear is: What are mushroom tinctures made of?

Seems like a simple question, right? But not all tinctures are created equal. Some are clean, potent, and honest...others may be filled with watered-down extracts, grain-based fillers, or low-quality alcohol. Let’s break down what should (and shouldn’t) be in your tincture bottle.
The 3 Ingredients That Should Be in Every Mushroom Tincture
1. Real Mushrooms (Fruiting Bodies Only)
This is the heart of the tincture. The fruiting body is the actual mushroom you’d see growing in nature. That’s where the highest concentration of beneficial compounds, like beta-glucans, terpenoids, and sterols are found.
At Boxed-In Mushroom Company, we never use mycelium grown on grain. No fillers. No fluff. Just real mushrooms.
2. Certified Organic Alcohol (for Extraction & Preservation)
Alcohol is essential for extracting fat- and alcohol-soluble compounds like triterpenes and hericenones. But not all alcohol is created equal.
We use certified organic sugarcane alcohol, not corn, wheat, or synthetic ethanol. It’s gentler on your body and better for absorption.
3. Filtered Water (for Dual Extraction)
Many of the beneficial compounds in mushrooms are water-soluble, like beta-glucans. That’s why we do a true dual extraction using both alcohol and hot water.
This ensures you're getting the full spectrum of medicinal compounds from each mushroom.
What Ingredients Should NOT Be in a Quality Tincture?
Mycelium on Grain
Often listed vaguely on labels, this is mushroom root-like material grown on rice or oats. It contains very little of the active compounds found in actual mushrooms.
It’s cheaper to produce, but far less effective.
Flavorings or Sweeteners
If it tastes like berry punch or vanilla cream, it’s probably masking something. Real tinctures should taste like mushrooms...earthy, bold, and real.
Synthetic Solvents
Some companies use industrial-grade alcohols that aren’t meant for consumption, or they won’t tell you what they use at all. If it’s not listed, that’s a red flag.
What Are Mushroom Tinctures Made Of at Boxed-In Mushroom Company?
Every bottle we make contains:
Real fruiting bodies of Lion’s Mane, Reishi, Cordyceps, Turkey Tail, or Shiitake

Filtered water (used during dual extraction)
Nothing else. Ever.
We also extract at a 1:1 ratio, meaning 1 gram of mushrooms per 1 mL of liquid. That’s real potency.
