Fruiting Body vs. Mycelium: What’s the Difference?

Introduction
When shopping for mushroom tinctures, powders, or extracts, you'll often see two terms used on product labels: fruiting body and mycelium. Sometimes those terms are presented as if one is automatically superior to the other. The reality is more nuanced.
Both the fruiting body and mycelium are important parts of a fungus, but they serve different roles and can differ in composition depending on the species, growing method, substrate, and processing.
For consumers, the important question isn't simply, "Which one is better?" It's understanding what was actually used to make the product you're buying.
In this Field Guide, we'll explain what fruiting bodies and mycelium are, how they're grown, why grain sometimes enters the conversation, and what information to look for when comparing mushroom products.
What Is a Fruiting Body?
The fruiting body is the part of a fungus most people recognize as a mushroom. It is the visible reproductive structure that develops when environmental conditions are right and, when mature, produces and releases spores.
Think of the fruiting body as one stage in a much larger fungal life cycle. What we see above the growing substrate may be the most familiar part, but much of the organism exists as an interconnected network called mycelium.
Fruiting bodies can contain naturally occurring compounds such as beta-glucans, proteins, sterols, phenolic compounds, and other constituents, although their composition varies considerably among mushroom species and growing conditions.
When a mushroom product says “made from fruiting bodies,” it means this recognizable mushroom structure was used as the starting material for the powder, extract, or tincture.
What Is Mycelium?
Mycelium is the network of microscopic, thread-like structures called hyphae that grows through a fungus’s food source or substrate. In nature, that substrate might be wood, soil, or other organic material.
Mycelium performs much of the behind-the-scenes work of the fungus. It grows through its environment, releases enzymes that help break down organic material, and absorbs nutrients that support continued growth.
Under suitable conditions, certain fungi use this established mycelial network to produce fruiting bodies—the mushrooms we recognize above the substrate.
Mycelium is therefore not an inferior or artificial version of a mushroom. It is a fundamental part of the fungal organism.
Why Does “Mycelium on Grain” Matter?
Commercial mycelium is often cultivated on sterilized grains such as oats, rice, or sorghum. The mycelium grows through the grain, using it as a source of nutrients.
The important question is what happens next. In some products, the colonized grain and mycelium are harvested and processed together. This means the finished ingredient may contain both fungal material and components of the grain substrate, including starch.
This is different from saying that mycelium itself is simply “grain.” Mycelium is fungal tissue. The concern is whether a product clearly distinguishes between mycelium and myceliated grain, and whether the manufacturer tells consumers what is actually being used.
That distinction matters when comparing products. Rather than relying on phrases such as “100% mushroom,” look for clear information about the species, fungal material, growing substrate, and processing method.
Is Fruiting Body Better Than Mycelium?
There isn’t a scientifically useful rule that says fruiting body is always better than mycelium, or vice versa. They are different fungal materials, and their chemical composition can vary by species, strain, growing conditions, substrate, maturity, and processing method.
For consumers, a more useful question is: What exactly is in this product?
A manufacturer should clearly identify whether the product is made from fruiting bodies, mycelium, myceliated substrate, or a combination. Just as importantly, it should explain how that material was grown and processed.
This is where transparency matters more than marketing terminology. Words like “fruiting body” or “mycelium” tell you something about the starting material, but they do not, by themselves, prove the quality of the finished product.
What Should You Look for on the Label?
A good mushroom product label should help you understand what you're actually buying—not make you decode marketing language.
When comparing products, look for clear answers to a few basic questions:
What mushroom species is being used?
Is the product made from fruiting bodies, mycelium, or both?
If mycelium is used, was it grown on grain or another substrate?
Does the finished ingredient include the growing substrate?
How was the mushroom material processed or extracted?
Does the company provide meaningful testing or information about the finished product?
No single phrase on a label tells the whole story.
The goal is transparency: you should be able to understand what went into the product and how it was made.
Field Notes
The fruiting body versus mycelium debate is often presented as though consumers must choose a side. Fungal biology is more interesting than that.
Both are parts of the same organism. What matters when evaluating a mushroom product is knowing which material was used, how it was grown, what else may be present, and how clearly the producer communicates that information.
At Boxed-In, we believe the label should be the beginning of that conversation—not the end of it. An informed customer should never have to guess what is inside the bottle.
